The history of St Mary Magdalene.

The original parish church of St. Mary Magdalene, Peckham, was built in 1841 and destroyed by bombing on 21st September 1941. The church principally served the spiritual needs of the parish with its focus on Sunday worship.

The Vicar at the time, Rev. Edmund D Buxton wrote the following in The Peckham Parish Church Magazine:

"The destruction of the church will be a great grief to many, especially to those who have known and loved it for many years and who have been regular worshippers there.

"But while our sense of loss is so acute let us remember that although the walls of the church building may have fallen the church still stands - the Church which is the Body of Christ of which we are members. Nothing can destroy that."

The present building was consecrated on 3rd November 1962 and consists of one ground floor worship area with fixed pews, and a much smaller basement area. This area provides a space for limited mid-week activities as well as a crèche on Sundays, and the ground floor is used only for Sunday worship. Other social and community activities also make use of the Church Hall (located app. 100 metres away at the end of St. Mary's Road).
